        Themagnificentbutterflythatwasrestingonthepetalofthepeachblossomhadflownaway.Onceitsdelicatewingsrecoveredfromfatigue,ithaditsownsecretnookinthedepthofthemyriadofblossomsthatbelongedtoitalone.Therewasacircularvitalityinitsbeautifulbodywhichkeptremindingitthatspringwasshort,thatitshouldmakethebestpossibleuseofthefleetingopportunitytoenjoylife.Orperhapsthebutterfly,unabletowithstandtheincreasinglyhotandhumidroomtemperatureescapedtothegardenfullofsunlightandspringbreeze.Atthemoment,cloudsofsteamemanatedfromtheseveralbamboosteamers,stackedoneupontheotheronthestove.Releasedfromtheboilingpointofwater,theycontinuedtopermeatetheair,lettingoutrelievedandgratifyingbreath,liketheevenbreathingfromthenoseandmouthofthesleepingAngelica.Thewarmandquietafternoonwasmostsuitableforanap.AsmileappearedonAngelica’sface,herhappythoughtswerelikethewillowswayinginthebreeze,flirtatiousandcapricious.

        “What!”saidDorna,clappingherhandstoherforehead,“Notgotosleepatmidnight,butgoforwalksandcomposepoemsbythelake?Heavens!Whataretheythinkingof?”

        “There’salotyoudon’tunderstand,Dorna.”Lotussaid.“Perhapsyou’llunderstandmoreafteryoueatmyvegetablesteameddumplings.”TheothergirlslaughedattheartlessandnaiveDorna.Theywereallseventeenoreighteen-year-oldgirls,likebuddingflowersabouttobloom.Howcouldtheyclearlycomprehendthehiddenmysteriesoflife?
